This is simply sensational! Antique 1850 red and green appliqué Quilt with phenomenal hand quilting and such a whimsical border detail.
We have researched this pattern and cannot find it exactly, but one that looked similar was listed in the Barbara Brackman encyclopedia of appliqué as an album block, (perhaps such that would’ve been used in the famous Baltimore album Quilts) and when we finally find the one that looks similar, the name is “unnamed“ lol!
This beauty was found and offered to the market, for the first time from Lancaster, Pennsylvania
A wonderfully large size at 93 x 88”
Masterfully hand quilted at an incredible 14 tiny stitches per inch. It’s truly hard to grasp how someone could achieve that, especially by lamp or candlelight! Her pattern includes Vining feathers and tiny grid work throughout.
In excellent condition, freshly laundered.
The very few flaws are:
• a few pieces have color lifting in the overdyed green, leaving splotches of the original blue mingled in the green.
• there is a faint ballpoint pen type of mark
• the back has a small spot of surface deterioration that looks like rust.
This is an incredible and early American treasure.
