Bridal quilts are highly sought after, and a quilt with stipple stitching is incredible to find! Girls were instructed that they must have a bakers’ dozen (13) quilts in their hope chests, prior to marriage. The 13th, would be the bridal quilt and could not be started until the engagement. This quilt would be used on the wedding night, and then put away.
Fun folklore: Family and friends would help, when the stitching was finished, the girls would hold the quilt be the edges and the bride would throw a cat into the middle…the girl closest to the cat as it jumped out would be the next to marry!
Stipple stitching is extremely close quilting, which makes it dense with 100s of thousands of hand stitches. These are highly desirable.
This one measures a generous 83 x 80″
Hand quilted at 10 tiny stitches per inch, with a 1/4 inch gridwork and intricate patterns. This includes a feathered wreath medallion set into a diamond. The handquilting is absolutely breathtaking throughout!
Handbound.
Excellent condition.
Flaws: We found one penny size spot on the back corner as well as a few additional, hard to find, pinhead size spots, see photos. Light age tanning which was too light to photograph.
This museum-quality quilt is one of a kind. A true American treasure that was found in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
