Bridal quilts are highly sought after, and this quilt is an incredible to find! Girls were instructed that they must have a bakers’ dozen (13) quilts in their hope chests, prior to marriage. The 13th, would be the bridal quilt and could not be started until the engagement. This quilt would be used on the wedding night, and then put away.
Fun folklore: Family and friends would help, when the stitching was finished, the girls would hold the quilt be the edges and the bride would throw a cat into the middle…the girl closest to the cat as it jumped out would be the next to marry!
This beauty was made in the early 1900s and features a large tulip bouquet feathered medallion. The tulip bouquets continue in the ground with gridwork. The gridwork is a tight 3/4″ with 11-12 tiny stitches per inch. Incredible orange peel designs throughout the border.
